Outing folks because "it would be great to have more openly gay folks as role models" is wrong, in my opinion. It is up to each person to choose how they wish to be viewed, and how private their lives are. With the possible exception of those who are actively working to remove/curtail rights.

The bigger issue for me is that Cook doesn't want to make a big deal out of his sexuality. And that is his right. IMHO

3. Apple has done some shitty things the last few years, GLBT wise

including their 'ex gay app' and others. Exodus International's app was given a 4+ rating by Apple, which means they were saying it had no offensive materials.
So Cook gets paid for that sort of thing, no? Yes, he gets paid for that sort of thing.
