White House Denounces NC Marriage Bill

White House spokesman Shin Inouye has issued the following response to North Carolina's proposed anti-gay marriage amendment.

“The President has long believed that gay and lesbian couples deserve the same rights and legal protections as straight couples,” Inouye said. “That’s why he has called for repeal of the so-called ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ and determined that his Administration would no longer defend the constitutionality of DOMA in the courts. He has also said that the states should determine for themselves how best to uphold the rights of their own citizens. Inouye continued, “While the President does not weigh in on every single action taken by legislative bodies in our country, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples. The President believes strongly in stopping laws designed to take rights away.”

Bush didn't adopt segregationist states' rights rhetoric to appease fundamentalists. He merely went whole hog on a constitutional amendment.

I'm sitting here in North Carolina watching my state make me a permanent second class citizen with very few rights, and Obama keeps giving speeches in which he says that it's up to the states to determine human rights.

How exactly is that a whole lot better than Bush on this particular issue? This is a serious question. I know that Obama is a lot better than Bush in a lot of other regards, but on this particular issue - the one that is the point of this OP and to which you are responding - I'm not seeing a big difference.

The only remedy for all these constitutional amendments denying equal rights to a minority group would be for the Supreme Court to find them all unconstitutional, and that will never happen as long as Democrats like Obama keep telling us that it's fine to leave human rights up to the states.
