Will gay marriage be repealed in NH?

The New Hampshire House Judiciary voted this week to endorse a bill repealing the state’s gay marriage law and replacing marriages with civil unions.

Marriage equality has been the law since Jan. 2010. The new bill would reverse this and would allow both straight and gay couples to form civil unions – unlike the first bill, which banned those as well. However, the bill also states that any individual, business, association or school could choose not to recognize civil unions.

The House can’t vote on the bill til 2012, says the NH Union Leader.

1. Well, John Lynch, our allegedly-Democratic Governor, has said he won't stand for re-election, ...

...the Republicans already hold veto-proof majorities in both houses
(although they couldn't quite have overcome a veto this year), and
right now, 2012 still looks bad for the Democrats in NH, so yes, this
Issue is coming back and could go bad.

This is another fall-out from 2010 having been such a disaster for
Democrats -- we went from having Democratic majorities in all
Branches of NH state government to having veto-proof Republican
majorities in all branches except for the Governor's chair where we
have a fake Democrat (who's now leaving, probably because he
knows he won't win again).

in the Uk it looks like civil marriages will replace civil partnerships for Gays with religous marriage excluded.

There's no indication, to my knowledge, that they mean to abolish civil partnerships, and there would probably be a fight if they tried.

3. What ever happened to "Live Free or Die"?

Honestly though, I think all marriage should be repealed and replaced with civil unions for everyone, though.

The state shouldn't be in the business of recognizing a religious ceremony. If someone wants that, they can do so but the official, legally recognized event by the state should be civil unions only - gay or straight.

...the legislature here (ME) passed it and it was immediately overturned by popular referendum. And we're not remotely the libertarian magnet NH is.

Given that Lynch is not running for re-election.

But it will be reinstated when Democrats regain control. Public support for it is pretty strong there.

8. Isn't it time to criminalize adultery, divorce, masturbation and birth control?

The sanctity of hetero marriage means nothing unless these craven opportunists place some serious-as-sin sanctions on adultery, divorce, masturbation and birth control. Anything less is hypocrisy.

If hetero people are the only ones who get to have their relationships legitimized, then they'll have to fucking work for it.
