Being Gay and a Christian

Being a Gay Christian is not easy! On one hand I have several Gay friends who only are not Christian but have a disdain for all Christians. Then on the other hand there are Christians who believe that being Gay is a sin against God. I refuse to give up either for the other which puts me in a conundrum.

I have known for as far back as I can remember that I was different from other boys in a sense that I was attracted to other boys the way they were attracted to girls. I kept my feelings hidden from everyone! I was raised in a Southern Baptist Church & at the time I was a child Homosexuality was never mentioned like it is today from the pulpit but there was alot of preaching of fire and brimstone & that God was to be feared on the pain of spending eternity in Hell (there were of course homophobic slurs at this time in my life from kids & adults alike). But I still felt different.

As a young teenager we moved from S.E. Kentucky to S.W. Florida (my father was a Southern Baptist, my mother a Lutheran (in S.E. Kentucky we did not have any Lutheran Churches). Needless to say GOODBYE SOUTHERN BAPTISTS & HELLO LUTHER NS! I felt more comfortable in the Lutheran Church the fire & brimstone seem to fade away from the sermons & something that was new to me in sermons appeared, love. Jesus loved me thats the first time I can remember being told that in a Church and it felt good. Even though I am feeling better That God was not going to smite me, there seem to be a bigger problem with people here in S.W. Florida using homophobic slurs which caused me to go into my shell even more (at least now I knew what a Homosexual was).

I don't feel that this is piteous or regrettable, either. Nor necessarily smarter.

If Christianity really does it for you, I'm glad for you, but it does nothing for me. To the contrary, I feel that it has helped make my life worse due to its strong element of homophobia.

3. I can totally understand where you are coming from.

I had a discussion last night with a long time Gay friend about this subject & I felt I had to defend myself because I was a also a Christian. I guess thats what promoted this writing.

P.S. Thanks for not dinging me on spelling errors. I forgot to run it through spell check.:blush: After rereading the piece I saw the error of my way & won't forget it in the future (or at least proof read).

2. You don't have to be a Gay Christian

Just be Bill King whoever and whatever that entails.

Your touching end shows that you are intelligent, sensitive and compassionate.

I love all my Brothers & sisters be they Gay, Straight, Christian, Non Christian & all others. I may not agree with them, but I love them all the same.

P.S. My father died in 1982, I regret to this day That I did not come out to him.

Anybody that doesn't get that about you or doesn't get you is missing something special.

I am sure that your father would be very proud of you.

6. Yes its natural for us to look at ourselves through a single dimension.

A useful exercise is to try and imagine yourself as one of your close friends and wonder how that person sees you.

Our friends usually have a more positive and more objective view of ourself than we do.

Its like looking in a mirror.

I am sure that you inspire your friends to be better people with your graceful spirit.
