3. Aren't teachers supposed to lead by example and be models for emulation?

I don't believe it is fair to dismiss a teacher because he/she is gay, but implying in a public forum that it would be just fine with him/her if gay teens killed themselves, is another matter.

This teacher needs to be fired.

How about I interpret the laws as I see fit? Say as in I believe you are endangering the lives of these kids so I will use brute force to protect them. You want to play these games? Let the games begin.

In other news: Antigay Facebook Posts Lead to Big Pay Cut

What you can and cannot say on Facebook is becoming a real problem for homophobes.

A Manchester, England, man who made antigay comments on Facebook got a 40% pay cut when his employer found out, and now the man is filing a lawsuit, the BBC reports.

Adrian Smith was a manager at Trafford Housing Trust and was moved to an adviser role after Smith said on Facebook that the Bible insists "marriage is for men and women," and he also called same-sex marriage "an equality too far."

Trafford Housing Trust said the statements violated its code of conduct, which requires employees to make clear on Facebook and elsewhere that their personal statements do not represent the company. Smith's Facebook page had identified him as a manager at the company.

I am to the point of using any means necessary to protect our youth from assholes like this. People like this are nothing but cowards & yes it would give me great pleasure to show them just how cowardly they are. I am a non violent person, but enough is enough!

Recommended.

9. I dont see how this woman is fit to teach
i have had the pta tell me in a job interview after i taught and was observed by the international and history department heads that i was not getting the job because i had posted to a right winger something like "ok then if the cops can beat lefties now for protesting it will be ok if you get the shit kicked out of you once the left takes power and you are the one protesting" and another post in which i say "pot should be legal, i smoke and have a job and have a Master's degree".... oh noes, and i dont get the job.... now this piece of shit teacher does things that actually hurt the morale of her students and she likely will not lose her job..... we live in a shitty world....

...one for hateful wingnuts, and one for normal people. I want a divorce from these "citizens".

It's too bad they chose to redact the name of the shit-bag teacher. He/she/it needs to be exposed.

It's also despicable that Tony Perkins reduces this to a free speech issue and that the anti-gay death-wishing of a high school teacher earns no rebuke.

Say it with me: Conservatives are shit. Conservatives are shit. Conservatives are shit.

25. Then you are not for unlimited free speech for teaches like a few of the usual suspects around here.
The reason I used quotes around "free speech" is because there are a few people here that think it's OK for a teacher to voice their hatred of their gay students on FB and not face any job consequences. Ridiculous.

Your defense of teacher's free speech rights, from what I have seen, is more nuanced AND fits the parameters laid out by the Supreme Court.

27. Well, it gets a little more tricky when the employer IS the government.
The employee is afforded more protections for say, political speech that criticizes the employer/school-board.

28. Publicly saying that people should kill themselves might wander over the line into illegal speech.
The Supreme Court has found that there are limits to free speech when said speech endangers the public. The Klan isn't allowed to burn crosses to intimidate people anymore. It's possible that this teacher's statements cross the line.

their face book pages. Was this teacher saying this to a student? It looks like it is some friend of his. I don't want to police everything teachers say online. If they are not doing it in their role as a teacher, then let them do it. They still have a first amendment right to be an ass.

I should also point out that there is a response in this thread that states the teacher should kill himself. The only response to that was "excellent" and no one said this was wrong. Should the poster of that remark lose his or her job for advocating the death of teachers? That teacher was not advocating killing kids. It wasn't even really a post supporting suicide if you read it closely. I agree we need to protect our kids, especially our queer ones. But we can't police every thought or comment on the internet.

What happens when my vies are considered the "bad" ones and I am fired for something I post on here?

33. I'm a teacher. Should I be allowed to advocate for the Ku Klux Klan online?
Believe me, I share your concerns about free speech, and I would be reluctant to punish someone for saying that his or her personal beliefs do not permit homosexual conduct or the like. I disagree, but I do believe that speech is precious and teachers must be allowed to have personal lives.

This incident, though, seems to me beyond the pale. Urging vulnerable people to kill themselves is not the same thing as defending one's personal moral/religious beliefs.
