Girl Scouts ‘humiliate’ transgender child as family waits for apology
from LGBT Weekly

A transgender child and her mother are waiting for an apology from the Girl Scouts of Colorado after the quintessential girls club refused to accept the child because he had “boy parts.”

Felisha Archuleta explains that her transgender son who prefers being a girl was refused admittance to the Girl Scouts club until later a supervisor intervened and said the child could be admitted. But that was weeks ago.

“They haven’t called me directly,” said Archuleta. “When I talked to the top , I said Bobby wants to be in the Girl Scouts, but have a different leader. She never called me back and only said they would give sensitivity classes.”

...

The actions stand contrary to what the Girl Scouts of Colorado says as part of its mission to include transgender children.

“He dresses like a girl, and you can’t tell he is a girl?” said his mother. “But the Girl Scout leader told us he can’t join because he has ‘boy parts.’… But no one would know he’s a boy unless they pulled his pants down.”

Archuleta said the troop leader also asked her, “What do you call it, a boy or a girl?” Archuleta, stunned, responded, “Excuse me?” The troop leader continued, “Bobby. You can see that’s a boy’s name, and everyone will know he’s a boy.”

“He told me that since this all happened, ‘Mom, you are right. They can’t be mean to me. I am a human being like everyone else,” said Archuleta.

2. Bobby. You can see that’s a boy’s name...
Bobby Chanel - the hottest girl in my class. 45 years since I've seen her and I STILL have a crush on her.

3. The Scouts, both boy and girl, are conservative groups.
My dh worked for the BS right out of college in the 1980s. They are a terrible organization. I'm not surprised that the GS are doing this.

8. The Girl Scouts is separate from the Boy Scouts and usually doesn't act this way.
Unlike the Boy Scouts national organization, the Girl Scouts is in favor of inclusivity. I'm surprised that this happened. I suspect it is a single Girl Scout leader. This behavior would not reflect the leadership of the Girl Scouts.

6. I grew up with a girl named Fred.
Seriously. And that was the 40s and 50s.

No one cared. She was named after her grandfather.

7. I had an Aunt Joseph and Uncle Marian
because I had a grandfather whose family tradition was to name the new baby after the last person in the family who died.

I was always grateful Aunt Philomene hung on until long after I'd safely exited the womb or I'd have been the girl named Phil.

9. I was very active in the boy scouts decades ago, it's only in later years I've come
to recognize how conservative it is ... at the time it didn't seem that way and we all had an excellent time in scouting. Sometimes I'm not sure if the scouts have changed or if my views have changed, but I doubt as a kid I would be active in boy scouts today, I find that sad to say, but that's the way I feel. I think a lot of scouting has been co-opted by RW religious groups too.

10. the boy scouts sell popcorn outside the store where I work
I always feel bad when I have to turn them down. I don't feel right supporting such an openly homophobic group, but I hate the idea of explaining that to the cute little 6 year old cub scout who's asking me if I want to donate. i usually say no thanks, avoid eye contact and scurry into work. What else can i do?

similar. I feel bad, but I just no longer support them.

15. I always feel the same way. It isn't like those boys could know why the Scouts are bad at a national
level but I just can't make myself support them in any way.

16. Be polite but honest.
Maybe if you say that you can't donate to the scouts to that 6 year old because they are discriminating against gays, then their parents will have to answer some questions. Either the parents are nuts (religious) or they will ask scouts to change their minds. It will hit them in the pocketbook I hope. And it may change some minds.

13. Terrible behavior of the Girl Scouts of AMERICA
Please remember that the Girl Scouts are an international organisation, and that Girl Scouts in other countries do not necessarily share their bigotry and prejudice. And unfortunately, in some countries, they do. I was a girl scout in Norway, and going on jamborees to other countries, meeting girl and boy scouts there, I think it is safe to say that the scouts are as prejudiced or as tolerant as the general population in their country.

In Norway, the organisation is co-ed, inclusive, and very tolerant. The scouts here have a stated policy of being an organisation where everyone can join and participate, regardless of ability (unlike the junior leagues of sport etc.)

17. If you are transgender, especially transsexual, you have to learn to be tough.
Because conservatives are meaner than the meanest snakes, and they will use any and every opportunity to humiliate and denigrate you.

Transfolk generally get it even worse than GLB because they are obviously always different if they live out or if it is physically obvious that they were born transsexual.

MtF get it really bad, because in this patriarchal society that devalues women as a matter of course, anyone with a male body that identifies as a female is considered lower than low by crocodile brained conservatives.

Go Bobbi!
