I hate losing long term members. I guess I'm lucky I have that white hot Irish temper....it flames quickly but blows out even faster. So, when I am angered by something on DU or the way someone has responded towards me or the tone/tenor of discussions that particular week, I just step away a few days.

I still need to learn, and I mean that...when I was in high school a gay male transferred into our school, which was much less backward then than it is now, his mother and my mother were friends, and there were some of us who would tell people to back off on the rare occasions that other students would dare to try to bother him.

My mother called to tell me that a cousin of mine died today. He and his partner have lived in FL for years. I asked her months ago if anyone in hospitals, and later, Hospice, were giving his partner any crap about seeing him or being with him and she said no. I made a nasty comment when my aunt, his mother, died years ago, if my fundy relatives had actually allowed him and his partner to attend the funeral...Bradley County, TN, and it really made my mother stop and think about things.

I still have much to learn about not being a bull in a China shop, and I hope that you and the OP will stick around and let me learn from you.

edited again to add: I grew up in a small North GA town, a very strict school, and we had 2 gay teachers on campus. Everyone knew, even parents and no one cared because those 2 men were very good at teaching. I have a friend who moved into that town roughly 10 years ago, and he tells me there would be witch hunts now. I don't know what has happened in that small town, but it ain't good.

For one thing, I can't think of a single instance of a long-time denizen of this forum being canned ( correct me if I'm wrong) since Skinner's effort at rapprochment. ( i.e "mending fences").

Prior to that, ts-ing of people here was a regular occurrence. ( Look at the census threads; go back a couple-three years. Lots of ghosts.)

That some straight DUers are slow on the uptake is to be expected and is one of the reasons a lot of us are here.

So... it seems especially sad to me that people like William would rather cede ground to the slow-on-the-uptakers than educate them. In previous years we'd get banned for taking on blatant and ( as is usually the case here) subtle forms of homophobic bias.


I do understand that not everyone has that level of frustration tolerance ( I rarely have the stomach to engage these folks myself, these days ) so I totally support him doing whatever is best for HIM.

40. To those interested I would like to explain what happened.

Two things have been bothering me on DU but they are two things that I have to deal with which has to do with peoples attitudes that are way different than mine. The attitudes that differ with are not necessarily wrong but I feel neither are mine. These attitudes just happen to clash & I feel I have done well in dealing with them. What sent me over the edge tho was the make up thread, that was the straw that broke the camels back for me.

I am disabled & do spend a lot of time on DU (I guess more than I should but being confined to the house for the majority of the time lately, I have made DU my second home). When I started this thread I did not want to point fingers or make a grand exit but I did feel the need to say goodbye to all of you here since I have been on DU for years, I just didn't want to disappear.

I took a break & I have received several PM's & e-mails that were nothing but encouragement and for that I am thankful.

I try to be nothing but positive but on occasion I do get snarky (thats just part of who I am).

I hope all of you can forgive me as I have worked through this and move forward.

Thank you for your words of encouragement, your support & most of all your friendship.
