Why does it say there are 776 replies to the Mending Fences thread but only 682 replies

2. It's a quirk of the software.

It's because there are deleted subthreads in that thread. When a subthread is deleted, the posts contained therein go "poof" and disappear from the reply count.

What's funny, however, is that Skinner said in that OP that no posts would be deleted in that thread. Go figure.
