HIV out of control in most U.S. patients

Three out of four people with HIV in the United States do not have their infection under control, even though anti-HIV drugs have been available for more than 15 years, according to a study released Tuesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“That’s a very poor rate. We have to do much better than that,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Keeping HIV under control is crucial not only for the 1.2 million people in the United States who carry the infection, but also for their sexual partners. Suppressing the virus decreases the chances it will be transmitted to a sexual partner by more than 95%, Fauci said.

“Treatment is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of HIV infection."

They make it sound as if it's the persons fault that he is not being treated. BULLSHIT! Yes drugs are available. they are NOT accessible for many. The wait list for the ADAP program is 3900 people (Florida only), those are the one's just waiting to be considered. If you make 30k a year you are not eligible, my HIV meds with nothing else is 25k a year (do the math).

In fact anything which furthers the perception of HIV as somehow a "gay issue" would be detrimental to the general point of fostering awareness.

The HIV forum is basically dead. I chose to post it in this forum.

Feel free to post this in another forum if you like.

13. Actually no. Why so angry?
I am just pointing the obvious. But if you ask me to single out one group over the other... sorry, but I won't. The current state of healthcare might be ok with segregating populations but I won't include myself there.

7. K&R - Further to the story about expanding testing, and also Hillary's recent claim
that the US government wants to eliminate HIV infections altogether.

How stupid do they think we are? We can't have single payer, we can't have a public option, but we should all be able to afford HIV medications that are many thousands of dollars per year with the generous unemployment benefits that last six months or else on Big Box store wages.

Does it ever strike anyone else how demoralizing it must be to work in some sectors of the government, esp. when you are someone who really wants to do things, but aren't given the proper resources to do what you know can be done? Just a major :wtf:

12. Small part of a much bigger problem.
Or, if referring to large numbers of people needlessly dying as "small" sounds callous then "large but still comparatively small part of a problem so large that even comparatively small parts of it are really quite large".

Yes, lots of Americans die because they can't afford life-saving treatment for HIV. But lots of Americans die because they can't afford life-saving treatment for all sorts of things.

The NHS is the number 1 reason I'm glad I'm British; America's failure to establish something similar - and the massive hostility to the idea - strikes me as bizarre. But, bizarre though it is, it's clear that the vast majority of Americans are less likely to vote for someone who supports free-at-point-of-use health care than for someone who doesn't (although, surreally, polls on "do you support free at point of use health care" are much less one-sided...), which in practice means that this isn't going to change any time soon, and if you want decent health care your options are 1) get rich, 2) emigrate or 3) die.

I wish there was something more positive I could say, but to be honest "you're all screwed, and will continue to be for the forseeable" appears to be about it :-s

15. The pugs in the NCGA keep cutting ADAP
My partner is lucky since his ADAP/Ryan White have long been established. There's a ten-mile-long waiting list in NC now with no relief on the horizon.

16. Yes, and IMO, failing to fund universal treatment is precisely why poor people still won't get teste
tested - they KNOW they will be kicked to the curb once they test positive.

Yet, last week and just yesterday and even today, in other sources, I'm reading how the CDC wants to expand testing, but there is no indication in any of the stories I've read that they are expanding access to treatment. To the contrary, as you say, money for access to treatment and HIV medications is continually being cut.

If you ignore what they say and rather observe what they are doing, one could get the impression that they are simply paving the way for Castro-style AIDS concentration camps. I want to be wrong, and I know I am likely wrong, but if so, where the fuck is the money for ADAP and access to treatment for those who are poor and test positive????

They are so full of it, and there is so much that could be done if it weren't for the usual suspects.
