Oh, how I could have benefited from a gay/straight alliance when I was in high school. I was a high school student in Decatur, Illinois, 1970 - 1974. Of course, then, there was very scarce information about homosexuality. Not the books, films, plays, general information that there is today. There was such a feeling of...isolation. I knew even then that I wasn't attracted to women and was attracted to other guys. But of course there was no possible way I could ever act on that. And, since I was different...I wasn't dating girls or anything like that, I wasn't a jock or anything like that...well, let's say I was introduced to the word "faggot". And I was quite acquainted with it.
I had a high school counselor, of course. But I couldn't talk to her about it. What would she say? I barely understood it myself. I mean, how in the world could I possibly open myself up to a total stranger like that? Hell, I was pretty much of a loner then...I didn't have any real friends in high school. And talking to my parents about it? Are you kidding? It's just as well I didn't...my coming out to my parents at 22 was horrible enough (but I won't talk about that here)
I so wish there was a gay/straight alliance when I was in high school. For those kids who don't really understand when they realize their sexual orientation...for some, it's hard. Given still society's attitudes towards homosexuality...it's not easy. Sure, it's the 21st century, but there is still a lot of ignorance, a lot of misunderstanding, a lot of...well, bigotry as far as some high school students are concerned. And, well...to have a such a resource as a gay/straight alliance...to talk to kids like you, as well as straight classmates who are supportive and caring and understanding...that should be nutured and encouraged.
Thank you, Midlodemocrat, for your concern and anger and support. I'm glad there are people like you who are on our side.
