Bitter Campaign Begins Over Alaska Gay Benefits

A bitter campaign has begun in Alaska over a proposed amendment to the state constitution to prevent public money from being used for same-sex partner health benefits.

The Alaska Constitution already forbids same-sex marriage but some lawmakers want that expanded to include benefits following a state Supreme Court ruling that ordered Alaska to provide the same-sex partners of public employees with the same benefits as received by married workers.

The court ruled in October that denying the benefits violates the Alaska Constitution's equal-protection clause.

This week the Colorado-based Focus on the Family entered the fray with an automated telephone campaign.
