Am I the only one who started to sweat when he heard the church
arsonists were theater majors? My first though was please let them be straight. If these guys had been gay we would never hear the end of it.

1. Well, like Jon Stewart said, they weren't Jews of Muslims
so "you're welcome."

2. I hadn't thought of that.
My first thought was, Thank God they are not Muslims. The wingnuts would have started a holy war over that and many innocent Muslims would have been harmed.

4. The college they attend says on it's website.....
that it is affiliated with the methodist church. Not that it means anything mind you, but I found it interesting. I never heard about the satanist thing, seemed like none of the kids interviewed on campus mentioned that when interviewed, seems like they would say they found them odd.

5. in the Birmingham news
"Said he was Satanist:

DeBusk, whose home address was listed as the Russet Woods subdivision in Hoover, had other interests as well. Friends said he and Ben Moseley were Satanists, which DeBusk told friends was "not about worshipping the devil, but about the pursuit of knowledge," according to Burgess.

DeBusk invited Burgess and others to go demon hunting last summer. Burgess said it didn't amount to much.

"All it ended up being was us playing guitar in the woods while a few of them got drunk," Burgess said. "I didn't think anything of it."

Burgess said he and DeBusk discussed religion loosely, debating whether pets go to heaven and what heaven looks like. "He told me I was one of the more intelligent Christians he's talked to," Burgess said. "Coming from a Satanist, I didn't know quite how to interpret that."

Ian Cunningham, a sophomore who lived in the same dorm as DeBusk, recalled returning from the campus chapel recently to snide remarks about being saved from DeBusk and Moseley. "He would constantly mock me," Cunningham said of DeBusk. "

7. That's because they are ignorant a$$hats
I've had a number of occasions where I've actually had to break it down for them.

Satan is one of God's fallen Angels.

As an atheis, I don't believe in God.

Therefore, I don't believe in Satan, and cannot be a Satanist.

But one of the biggest problems inherent in Fundamentalism is that

8. Not the only one in the least - when they first started burning, I figured
we'd get blamed. Once they were named, I even searched MySpace to make sure none of them had a page and identified themselves as gay or bi.

I kept actually hoping that it was someone on the Radical Cleric Moore for Governor campaign that was doing it to make us queers look bad - now that would have really shown the world how dangerous some of these wingnutters are.

10. I had not heard that they were theater majors....
but if I had, I would have worried for my southern homosexual friends, because there would have been a terrible backlash for them.

13. When I first heard of the church arsons ...
... and the fact that they were apparently not racially motivated, I had a sick feeling in my stomach and hoped that they fires were not set by anyone gay. When I heard about two of the suspects being "theater majors," I feared the worst since that's such a stereotype of gay men.

I still worry that some guy will come forward and say - truthfully or otherwise - "I had sex with one of the suspects" and it will create an even larger backlash. The fact that there hasn't been media speculation (as far as I've heard) about the sexual orientation of the suspects makes me breath a bit easier.
