As the clock tower chimed a quarter to noon, more than 400 Lehigh University students and professors walked out of their classes today to protest a lack of diversity on the Bethlehem campus and a hostile atmosphere for people of color, women, and gays and lesbians.
"What do we want?" junior Alexandra Milspaw, of Harrisburg, screamed over a bullhorn, prompting the audience who circled around the flagpole at the center of campus to yell back: "Diversity!"

Dozens of speakers talked about times they were made to feel uncomfortable at Lehigh because of ignorant comments about race, being sexually harassed at fraternity parties, or being ashamed to tell their friends about their homosexuality.
Milspaw, one of the coordinators of the event, read from a list of demands for the administration, including more courses about racial and ethnic studies, funding for cultural programming, and researching diversity programs that have worked at other schools.
