The high school club had been fighting a losing battle to get the Los Altos City Council to declare a Gay Pride day. Last month, the council decided to ban all proclamations dealing with sexual orientation. Some council members said it was inappropriate for the city to endorse an issue that has riven the nation and doesn't affect city business.
The students were crushed, saying they only wanted a piece of paper -- the kind the town regularly gives to Eagle Scouts and longtime volunteers.
After hearing about their effort, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom declared June 7 Los Altos High School Gay Straight Alliance Day.
