GLSEN ASKS FOR MEETING WITH GAY BLOGGER
http://rjr10036.typepad.com/proceed_at_your_own_risk/2006/03/several_days_ag.html

The power of blogging! A NY blogger makes statements about GLSEN (the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) working with the right wing. The result? GLSEN asks for a meeting with the blogger! The times, they are a changin'

You can read Richard Rothstein's account of his GLSEN meeting here:

1. i don't believe that ''meeting'' with fundie groups
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 11:26 AM by xchrom
helps us at this time at all.

fundies need to be met with resistance at evry damn turn for now.

if, if they begin to feel that their aggression is counterproductive -- maybe then -- but not until then -- and not until we begin to make them feel some real heat.

it was an interesting article -- but in this case glsen isn't speaking for me.

2. We should cooperate with the fundies - when they do a petition drive
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 11:53 AM by BR_Parkway
in front of WalMart to ban homo weddings to "protect the sanctity of marriage", we should be right next to them with petitions to ban divorce (I'm thinking of getting some Landover Baptist shirts to wear!)

When the fundies are on TV asking for 10 commandments in school, we need to be right there asking for the Beatitudes, the Koran, and whatever the appropriate counterparts from the other various religions be posted.

When they scream for ID to be taught in our schools, we make the identical arguments for the Flying Spaghetti Monster being taught as well.

My partner and I were out in town the other day, and there is a guy wearing Jesus Saves sandwich boards walking up and down the main intersection in town. I asked my partner how long it would take them to have me committed to a mental institution if I dressed similar with the words Zeus is Coming Again!

3. i want gay groups to protest these lunatics
coming and going from their churches.

they were here in san francisco the other day with their hate.

why should we leave them in peace in their temples of ever renewing hate?

get at them at their doorways -- they want a war -- so why not take it to them?

4. They have respectability now, I want to show their hypocricy - it's the
only thing that will make the average person stop and think about what kind of hatred they are promoting. Protesting is fine, except that it gets dismissed and belittled as 'far left extremeists pushing their homosexual agenda"

We need to stop giving them the weapons to wage war against us - and start using their own arguements to take the war to them.
  • Let them explain, once and for all, why they vote NO to equal marriage for gays - but won't vote NO against divorce.
  • Let them explain, once and for all, why they want SOME religion in the classroom - but not ALL religion in the classroom.
  • Let them explain, once and for all, why they want THEIR religion used in the courtroom - but not OTHER religion in that same courtroom.

If we keep fighting as we have, they simply make us look to be against religion. That doesn't resonate well with general America. We have to fight differently - and make people see that they have a certain religion that they want everyone in the country to have to follow.

5. we've been nice -- and they explain ALL the time
their reasons for abortion, gay marriage, etc.

i mean falwells comment re: gay folk and feminists made HEADLINES across the nation.

what is it that you think people don't understand?

this is a fight for our lives -- i.e. florida and other states have made no secret re: gay adoption -- you could read in newspapers everywhere that the pope said that gay parenting does violence to the children adopted.

violence!?!?!!? from the pope -- and how is that in the least ambiguous?

what joe or joette six pack reading that doesn't understand it?

now i am the first to be critical of the astuteness of the american public -- but we've gone through the damn looking glass here.

6. I don't think we're in disagreement - all I'm suggesting is a change
of tactics. We've fought, we've called them bigots, we've rallied, we've protested, we've bought advertising - and they still sway people with their comments.

So, we need to show their comments to be totally hypocritical. We need to publically ask them, time and time again - if you support a ban on gay marriage, but not a ban on divorce - how are you protecting marriage?

7. i've not seen a head-on confrontation with the churches in question.
for the first time that i can think of gay people protested bigoted christians here in california when they were hosting a revival at candlestick.

this is keeping with the tactics of anti-women, anti-abortionists who came here to rally.

they were met soundly and loudly with vigorous resistance.

we've protested anti-gay marriage ammendments in missouri and other places -- but we've not taken on the enemy directly.

that's one of the places we must move -- their churches represent an ever renewing well of hate -- to leave them alone is to place ourselves in peril.
