Virginia Governor Refuses To Sign Anti-Gay Amendment

April 10, 2006 - 9:00 pm ET

(Richmond, Virginia) Virginia Governor Tim Kaine announced Monday he will not sign a bill that puts a proposed state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

But it will not prevent the measure from going to voters in November. Kaine said that he will allow the bill to take force without his signature.

2. Can he not veto it, rather than let it pass without his signature?
I'm curious as to how that works.

Considering he supported constitutionally banning both marriage equality and civil unions in his campaign, this is great news.

3. I think it is basically his way
of not supporting the bill, but still allowing it to go to voters. Again, more symbolic than anything else and now he can come out against it.
