One Thursday, many Asheville Citizen-Times readers opened their morning paper to find a two-page spread in the Home & Garden section that quoted what many evangelical Christians believe to be the Bible’s prohibitions and condemnations of homosexuality. This was on one page, while on the other was a list of a couple of thousand individuals and businesses who chose to voice their support of Wolf Laurel and other local businesses who choose to stress “Family Values” that are consistent with evangelical Christian beliefs about what “Family Values” means.
Those names listed signed their names in support of the following:
”Those who choose to live a deviant life style do not have the right to flaunt their sin in the face of a business, church, or the community and expect to be accepted. We that are listed below endorse the right of the management of Wolf Laurel Ski Slopes in their decision to maintain a clean family atmosphere at their resort. We also support any other businesses and also any Churches and any individuals who are willing to do the same.”
Pretty hard-hitting stuff for those queer folks reading the AC-T on a Wednesday morning. It’s no wonder that so many of us showed up to oppose this blatantly homohating ad, which cost thousands of dollars to print. How many hungry families and children could that have fed? Why not take that money and give it to hungry people who believe the same rhetoric, at least then some good comes of all this money spent.
