Report: Arrests In Gay Bashings Of U.S. Tourists In St. Maarten

Two men are reportedly under arrest in connection with the beatings of two gay American tourists on the Caribbean resort of St. Maarten earlier this month.

The Dutch news agency ANP reports that the pair were arrested on the French side of the island, possibly on Friday. The ANP said that a third suspect remains at large.

Philipsburg police have refused comment. St. Maarten Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein in an interview with the Philipsburg Herald said that the investigation was “very touchy” and “delicate” and that he would give a statement “as soon as this is possible.”

The ANP report said that all three suspects were residents of the French side of the island. Stein told the Herald that because the island “is divided in two territories makes it sometimes more difficult to conduct certain investigations.”
