Robin Wirthlin is a bad mother
What kind of a mother is Robin Wirthlin? Parents who truly care about the well-being of children, their own and others, don’t turn elementary schools into media circuses.

Wirthlin, a Lexington resident and parent of a 7-year-old boy who is a second grader at the Estabrook Elementary School, complained to the school after learning that her son’s teacher read the book King and King to his class. King and King, like Cinderella, is a fairy tale about a prince who must marry. Like Cinderella, the prince meets his mate and marries. Like Cinderella, the prince marries a boy.

Wirthlin and her husband complained to their son’s teacher and school principal. They scheduled a meeting with Lexington Schools Superintendent Paul Ash for this week, but cancelled it. Instead, they teamed up with anti-gay activist Brian Camenker and took their story to the media.

The substance of the Wirthlins’ complaint seems to be that the topic of gay marriage deals with sex and sex is too mature a subject for an elementary school classroom. Oh and that positive portrayals of homosexuality violate their family’s values.

1. And if we could travel back in time
Edited on Thu Apr-27-06 07:46 PM by ayeshahaqqiqa
to, say, 1850, we might find Withlin's ancestors as some of the few people in Massachusetts that felt that an African American wasn't human, and that, as runaway property of a white man in the South, should be captured and shipped back there in chains. Showing blacks and whites as human beings equal before the law would have violated their family values.

Sheesh. My ancestors who lived in Lexington must be rolling over in their graves. From what I've read of them, hatred and meanspiritedness was NOT part of their family values.

2. OMG - We *should* be offended by sex in elementary school !!
I agree completely with the article, we should be "...also calling for... school libraries to get rid of all copies of Cinderella, which deals with marriage and therefore sexuality; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which deals with violence (the queen’s attempt to poison Snow White) and sexuality (she is cured with a kiss); Rapunzel, which deals with both infertility (the couple who can’t have a child until they bargain with a witch) and sex (the prince who climbs to Rapunzel’s window)."

:sarcasm:

Now there was SEX EDUCATION! But they kept it on the shelf even at my catholic school. Much worse than King & King

6. I teach this age level. So, for what it's worth, here's my $ .02
If you live in a community that has a high gay population, you really can't be surprised that the teachers will make the children of the gay residents feel included. Duh. If you don't like it--- go to a private school or move.

And on another note, it is perfectly possible to talk about marriage and not even bring sex into it. If you simply answer the kids questions without giving any extra information, it's quite simple. For example, my kids may ask "Mommy, why aren't you married to a woman?" To which I reply "Because I'm married to your father." That actually works. Simple. YOu can talk about commitments and how to have a good family relationship without talking about sex... unless you're a bigoted fundy. Then it's all you ever think about. I wonder, when these idiot's kids ask about marriage, do they tell them all about mommy and daddy's sex life? I would think not. So why would gay parents be any different?
