Michigan Store Boycotted for Gay Support
By Bryan Ochalla

A few statistics pulled from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index is all the evidence usually needed to prove being gay-friendly in 2006 is good for business.
That is, unless your business is in Mason, Michigan.

Teri Yale, owner of Davey’s Basement (www.daveysbasement.com ), an alternative record shop located in downtown Mason, found that out the hard way after supporting the local high school’s gay-straight alliance.

After agreeing to sponsor a float the group entered into Mason High School’s homecoming parade in late September, Yale and her year-old business were hit with labels, accusations, police visits—and, of course, a boycott.

3. Isn't it obvious?
Gay people are out to destroy the American family.
Therefore, gay people are terrorists.
Therefore, individuals and businesses that support gay "causes" are in collaboration with terrorists.
Therefore, police visits are warranted so that collaborators know that they are being watched.

:sarcasm:

Also, this is an "alternative" record store. Since homosexuals have an "alternative" lifestyle, it stands to reason that the store is a front organization for gay terrorists. Since so many young people listen to alternative music, it stands to reason that the store is intent on recruiting young people into the larger alternative lifestyle which, we have already established, includes homosexuality and God alone knows what other kinds of perversions. The children must be protected, thus the police visits to make sure that underaged people are not frequenting that establishment.

:sarcasm:

12. "classic head shop setting"
The store's website refers to the store as a 'classic head shop setting'. I don't know if that means they actually sell drug paraphernalia or just look like a place that once did- but it might explain the police having a look at it if fundies are calling them saying that the store is promoting drug use.

5. Bandwidth exceeded on website
I can't tell if people bombarded Davey's Basement website with support or insults, but the site is crashed. I can't believe people can be so insular in their thinking to drive this record store out of business.

6. Sound like that Hotel rainbow flag bru-ha-ha all over again....
There are still plenty of places where being gay-friendly is all you need to have a witchhunt against you. Truly appalling, but a worthwhile reminder that anti-gay persecution affects all people, gay and straight alike.

7. Did this happen above the Mason-Dixon Line?
That's hard to believe, considering the things said around here from time to time.

8. I grew up near this place....
It was about 15 miles away in distance, and about 1000 miles in culture. I am not surprised. Good for Teri Yale for having the chutzpah to support the loval GSA, but given that Mason is more or less a Freeperville, I'm not surprised by the response.
