The Hatfields and the McCoys

Yikes, it's too early on a Saturday morning without coffee to be reading this stuff on the web:

Romney's record on gay rights, social issues in cross-hairs - Boston.com

Addresses False Accusations Against Romney.

Well it seems our little leader of Massresistance/Article 8/Parent's Rights Coalition..., Brian Camenker, has been attacking our Absentee Ex-Governor Willard Romney and now accusations are flowing in the opposite direction.

Camenker, who usually just goes on the attack after gay people and children's books set his sights on Romney when Ole Willard started to mention the "P" word (that's Presidency folks). He released some document of sorts that chronicled Romney "gay" activities from his failed run at the Senate to the present day. When they, Massresistance (and I use the term "they" loosely since there really is only about two of them) found they weren't getting the credit they thought they deserved for leaking all this information about Romney they tried to bring in the BIG Guns:

Activist Claims 'Deception' Behind Gov. Romney's 'Conversion' to Conservatism

Apparently these attacks on Romney are started to have some effect because now Romney is going on the defense (and after Camenker) Caution: the following link is to a flipflopping wannabee presidential candidate:

Research Briefing: Meet The Real Brian Camenker Caution: this link is to a flipflopping, Ken doll-like, say what you think the people want to hear, presidential candidate.

Which includes these gems:

Camenker Is Not A Credible Voice And Pushes An Extreme Ideology

Camenker Has A Record Of Attacking Prominent Republicans

Yes, those are on Willard Romney's official website.

1. I sorta knew him years ago (Camenker)
I was friends with his younger brother.

I saw your post, and figured there couldn't be too many Brian Camenker's around - yup, it's the same guy. Sorta surprised he turned into a homophobic wingnut, though. I sort of considered the family somewhat liberal, but then in the early 70s everybody was sorta liberal. Brian ran for mayor when he was 18, finished third (just outside making the runoff), but us kids were surprised he got any votes at all in the town of retirees we lived in. Anyway, he's a guy who I hadn't heard about (nor thought of, for that matter) in about 35 years...

3. No dirt from when i knew him
That was 35 years ago. Plus, I was friends with his younger brother... didn't know Brian or the youngest brother all that well, they were a few years older and younger. IIRC, Brian left for college shortly after he lost the mayor's race... I hadn't heard or even thought about him until now.

Though I don't recall anything scandalous he did back then, if you search archives in the Venice Gondolier or South County edition of the Sarasota Herald Tribune you may find quotes, LTTE, or his platform. This would have been somewhere around 1972 or so. His candidacy occurred after the voting age was lowered to 18, I guess it hadn't occurred to the city that someone so young would run for office. I was about 15 at the time, all us younger kids were cheering him on, but of course we were too young to vote. I don't remember what his platform was. Brian got about 1500 votes or so, IIRC. This was in a city of population about 10,000, and probably only 60% or so voted. We all thought Brian did surprisingly well.

All 3 brothers were very intelligent straight "A" students and had pretty decent athletic ability. The 2 older brothers (Brian and my friend) were pretty politically aware, and were great debaters (don't know about the youngest, he would have only been 12 or 13). I would now say at that time they were probably more liberal than I. That's why it was a bit of a surprise to discover Brian's present politics.
