ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Same-sex marriage was up for debate Thursday in a Maryland Senate committee.
Some Republicans have suggested amending the state constitution to ban gay marriage. A decision about gay marriage is expected in coming months from the state's highest court.
Republican sponsors said Maryland should not wait for the court to act and should amend the constitution anyway, with voters approving a same-sex amendment next year.
However, few give the amendment any chance of success.
Democrats said they should wait for a court ruling, and Gov. Martin O'Malley has said he would veto an amendment if it passed.
The House will hear a similar amendment in two weeks.
