U.S. Evangelists Invade Canada To Fight Gay Marriage

(Ottawa) American evangelists are urging Canadians to oppose same-sex marriage. The anti-gay groups are using Christian broadcasters to spread the message.

Earlier this week, James Dobson, chairman of the Colorado-based Focus on the Family, in a broadcast heard on 130 radio stations across Canada denounced the government of Prime Minister Paul Martin which will bring in a same-sex marriage bill next week.

"Your prime minister, Paul Martin, has recently done things to subvert the will of the people," Dobson said.

"It is clear here in the United States that the American people do not want same-sex marriage," Dobson continued. "I would hope that Canadians who also do not want same-sex marriage would be encouraged by what has happened down here."

6. Last time I looked, the Canadian people...

couldn't care less. It's a non-issue. There's no outrage except with the minority of mouth-breathing RWers like the Conservative party. But that was pretty much expected.
I think that most Canadians detest the Fundagelicals from the south and their message of homophobia and hate. And the recent Sponge-Bob incident has further lowered our opinions of them.
And we are not a church-going people like our neighbors to the south.
About 70% of us do not attend churches regularly and that number is increasing.
We also have a dislike of Church leaders interfering in politics. One of our senior cabinet ministers just told the Catholic Church to take a hike on the same-sex marriage issue. They were told long ago that if they didn't believe in same-sex marriage, they didn't have to perform them or even recognize them and this was recently confirmed by a Supreme Court opinion.
And finally, like most countries these days, we detest the idea that the US is trying to dictate policy to us. GWB is VERY unpopular here and most people recognize that the fundamentalists are in bed with him.
So, I predict that they'll be roundly ignored by us and if they push it, there will be a backlash. We're not anybody's doormats.
