City Ordered To Pay $1.3 Million To Gay Musical

A federal court has ordered the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico, to pay the producers of the gay musical Naked Boys Singing $1.3 million in compensation for closing the campy musical a day before it was to open at the state-owned Tapia Theatre in 2003.

The show was shuttered by the Public Safety Commissioner, Adalberto Mercado, and officials from both the Teatro Tapia Board of Directors and the city of San Juan, after seeing a technical rehearsal.

At the time, San Juan mayor Jorge Santini was quoted in the media as calling the production "immoral".
