Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 11:29 PM by pinto
I am a Dem mainly concerned with Social Security, the war in Iraq and building the Democratic base here at home.

Tonight's SOTU makes it clear to me, though. I am out of touch.

I was hoping for a compromise position, or to be honest, an avoidance of the issues we gays face in the Federal agenda.

But, noooooooooo...the challenge has been thrown.

(I've worked so hard to be an honest member of the whole community, and have done fairly well in my efforts, and to have who I am questioned by the President of the United States, finally, on international TV, is my last straw.)

I'm done. I will oppose each and every action of this administration. I didn't want to do this, but jeeez..I can't live with this.

That's my take tonight. pinto

(ed for clarity)

2. And I'll Be Standing Beside You
that bastard is endangering the lives and rights of family members and friends I love. I want him to go down and I want it to hurt worse than anything he could imagine. I want him and the entirety of his administration and his corrupted family to pay to the last farthing.

10. sorry, my post #7 was in reply.
And overall it seemed a lame speech. The ending - which featured an Iraqi representative - was apparently very moving. I missed that part.

thanks, pinto

4. I answered to you on GD
but I've been fighting these assholes on this issue for years, and I'm a straight woman. I simply will NOT abide the government trying to harm people for who they are. I thought we were WAY past that. I really did.

5. Well, I am not a homosexual
but I have never been more depressed then I have been tonight. I really despise Bush. He is the most arrogant person in public office I have ever seen. I have never been so depressed after listening to a so called President as I have tonight. I am so sick of the clan wearing the lapel pin,American Flag, appearing as a club or gang against anyone who does not go along with their agenda. Tonight makes me want to give up on America. It has become a group of crap that only cares for the one and only. Where are the reps. for the normal Americans, that want to live and let live. They are no longer there for us and that is pretty sad , that we don't have someone to stand up for those that don't follow along with the the wind up dolls.

for Compromise with these......I am trying to think of an appropriate word to describe them. To call them animals is an insult to animals.
They are heartless, souless, evil beings that are out to destroy the world and everything in it.

I am not gay, but you don't have to be gay..and should not have to be gay to fear the agenda of those who persecute the gay community...
Remember this? We will all be on the list eventually...

"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out.
Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."

7. A constitutional amendment meant to exclude a portion of the country
from constitutional commitments between the state and the people is....let's see, unconstitutional.

I read that somewhere.

Bush said tonight that he supports an amendment to the Constitution that defines marriage as only a man and a woman.

The proposal's been around for a long time. But for the President - and he is the President - to take a minute or so to publicly jerk off his base means we gays have a battle. I had hoped it would go differently.

There are bigger issues on the table, but this one I can't ignore.

12. Glad to read this but question
Did not watch the speech - other than the language he always uses - Marriage must be protected from activist judges, did he say something else about gay rights, or was it - for the sake of the children line that's got people riled up today.

14. no, it was a blunt "I support Constitutional amendment" . I was flabber-
gasted he'd pander to his base in a speech generally seen as an historically "unifying" statement. Y'know what I mean? I was actually hurt that a Prez would stoop to that kind of political slime. Hence my posts...

Of course the President has no real power to amend the Constitution, but I doubt most folks know that. What hit me was his use of the "bully pulpit" in a SOTU to call for it.....

13. Well to be quite honest, that particular lesson is not just for gays.
One of the biggest problems with our democratic legislators is they actually believe the right can be reasoned with and that compromise is possible, not just on gay rights but EVERYTHING.

It is beyond apparent that is not the case. And the sooner we all learn to stand our ground the better off we will be.
