Alabama Anti-Gay Bill Heads To House Vote
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/02/020305alaBan.htm

Legislation paving the way for Alabama voters to decide if the state Constitution should be amended to ban gay marriage is headed for a vote in House.

The measure was approved by a 12 - 2 vote Wednesday in committee. The only issue was when the measure would go to voters.

Although Alabama already has legislation blocking same-sex marriage, both Democrats and Republicans agree that the only way to prevent judges from overturning the law is to enshrine traditional marriage in the state Constitution.

"We do have a responsibility as legislators to do what's best for the long-term interest of the state," said bill sponsor Rep. Yusuf Salaam (D-Selma).

how is enshrining discrimination in the constitution best for the state?
