GOP Dumps On Bloomberg Gay Marriage Stand

The tightrope being walked by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a thin wire over a chasm of potential political oblivion, one that became even thinner Thursday night in Queens.

The mayor is appealing a ruling last week that denying same-sex couples the right to marry is unconstitutional. (story) In announcing the appeal the mayor said that he supported gay marriage but wanted the issue decided by the state's highest court.

It was a decision Bloomberg hoped would appease both the gay community and his own Republican Party. But no one is satisfied.

1. It's better than Shrubs' flip-flopper stance (errr...I mean, stances)

* doesn't know where he stands on the issue.

First he was for amending the Constitution to make marriage between a man and a woman.

Then he said it was an issue that should be left up to the states.

After the Falwell brigade freaked--* touted amending again.

Then, right before the election, * said he was for civil unions.

After the election, the issue was nowhere to be found and * said he had no plans to resurrect the issue.

Again, more freaking from Falwell brigade.

Then Bush, in his SOTU speech, announced he is for upholding the notion that marriage is between a man and a woman.

Anyone else get the feeling that Shrubby is a bit confused about this issue? Maybe Mr. Gannon should ask * about his true feelings. ;)

2. Don't forget he tried to block enforcement of his own pro-diversity law

He signed a law mandating that companies doing more than a certain amount of business with the state had to be gay-inclusive.

And then he fought to block the law from being implemented, citing a shortage of competitive bids.
