Spain’s ruling Socialists held a strong lead as returns came in from a national election on Sunday, a victory that would give Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero a second four-year mandate to pursue his agenda of sweeping social liberalization and political change.

Voters in Riogordo, Spain, during general elections on Sunday.
With about half of the vote counted, the Socialist Party claimed victory. “We can quite clearly say that the Socialist Party has won,” Jose Blanco, the party’s secretary, announced Sunday night. He added, “It’s a victory for all citizens who voted four years ago in favor of change.”

The contest pitted two political warriors bearing grudges from the past — Mr. Zapatero on the left against Mariano Rajoy on the right — in a rematch of their bitter contest four years ago.

The elections returns reported so far showed the Socialists receiving 45.1 percent of the vote, compared with 38.9 percent for Mr. Rajoy’s Popular Party, according to The Associated Press.

Yippee. They did well by doing good. Four more years of social liberalism in Spain.
