Bill Would Allow Florida Gay Adoptions

A state lawmaker has filed legislation that would allow gay people to adopt children under certain circumstances. Senator Nan Rich wants to amend Florida's 1977 law that bans gay people from adopting.

Under the plan, judges could grant such adoptions if they conclude a permanent placement with gay foster parents is more important to a child's development than maintaining a temporary placement.

Senator Rich says the plan is in the best interests of children who have long-standing relationships with their gay foster parents and consider them to be their parents.

1. As a Floridian and retired social worker.. it is about time.

I'm not gay but I and everyone else with a brain knows the sexual orientation of a parent means nothing. What is important is how a child is cared for and loved. The religious (not) right needs to get over their homophobia. But then I admit, I have neoconphobia!

4. That's A Step In The Right Direction... BUT...

... it still sounds as though gay parents are some sort of LAST RESORT to be considered ONLY when all other MORE DESIRABLE options have been exausted.

Am I reading too much into that? Should I just shut up and be happy that they aren't calling for our executions? :silly:
