A slim majority of Americans agrees that the tax code discriminates against homosexuals and unmarried couples who live in the same household, a new Zogby Interactive poll reveals. The poll, which has a margin of error of +/-0.6 percentage points, finds that 51% of Americans believe that the tax code punishes gays and unmarried couples in the same household by forcing them to file their taxes separately and pay the higher single rate, despite the fact their living arrangement is virtually indistinguishable from a married couple's. A 45% minority disagreed.

The notion that the tax code is discriminatory is inversely proportional to respondents' ages: while 41% of seniors (age 65+) hold this view, it is a winning argument for 64% of the youngest respondents (age 18-29).

The argument also clearly ties into political ideology and party identification. Democrats overwhelmingly agree, by a 79% to 18% margin; Republicans overwhelmingly disagree, by a similar 74% to 23% margin. Independents come down close to the national divide on the issue, with a 52% majority favoring the viewpoint.

I'm not going to post a link because I think(?) you're supposed to do the surveys for Zogby in order to see the full summaries, but that part was interesting enough I wanted to post it.
