Poll: Majority support gay couple rights
Poll: Majority support gay couple rights

(New York City) The first national survey on LGBT rights since the passage of Proposition 8 in California shows that three-quarters of Americans favor either marriage or domestic partnerships/civil unions for gay and lesbian couples.

Gay and lesbian couples are able to marry in two states, and comprehensive civil union or domestic partnership laws exist in only five others and the District of Columbia.

Only about two in 10 say gay and lesbian couples should have no legal recognition.

The Pulse of Equality Survey was conducted by Harris Interactive for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

When it comes to deciding between marriage and civil unions the survey found that the public is about evenly divided with 47 percent favoring marriage and 49 supporting civil unions.

The survey also found a majority of Americans favor a broad range of other LGBT policies and legal protections.

1. three-quarters of Americans favor either marriage or domestic partnerships/civil unions
but if I've read all the threads correctly, anything but marriage is unacceptable.

Only 47% favor marriage, which is less than the majority.

2. Yeah, I guess we should just take what we're fed and stop bitchin'
I mean, it's not like we're regular people or anything.

3. No one is saying you should stop bitchin'
however, if the OP says the majority supports gay couples' rights, but it's not the rights gay couples want, does it matter?

5. Not if you're not gay.
In fact, if we would just seek the opposite sex, there'd be no problem at all. :sarcasm:

Here's the deal:

I'm glad that most people support the reality that we are people and that we possess some of the same rights as other people. I really am. Give yourselves a big ol' pat on the back.

But the fact is, we already inherently possess ALL the rights of other people. We are fully, 100% human beings. So, no, it's not good enough to be treated as "almost" people.

The bottom line is that NO ONE has the right to tell us we aren't 100% human beings. But they do, all the time. We are being prevented from expressing all the rights of human beings, including the right to marry the person we love.

That's so wrong as to be downright ugly.

7. In February 2005
Only 23 percent of those surveyed said gays should be allowed to marry.

Looks to me like a seismic shift toward marriage equality over the course of only 3 years.

But now that we're so close, we should probably retreat, right?

8. I wish Democrats would start acting like they realize this
When polled, the MAJORITY of the public routinely backs Democratic ideals, positions, policies, and plans. Yet the Democratic leadership acts like cowards, constantly bending over backwards to accommodate the most right-wing conservatives out there, afraid anyone on the right might say something mean to them.

This is especially true on the issue of gay rights.

ENDA has something like 70% support, does it not? So why hasn't it been passed yet?!?
