To My GLBT Friends....You will love this...LOL
Was just sitting down in the lobby of my apartment building waiting for the mailman. There were quite a few (far older than me) residents there. Prop 8 must have been on Fox or somewhere this morning and was the subject of conversation. Very quietly I interjected that "it's a matter of civil rights." I then explained what I have learned here on DU, exactly what Prop 8 is about, how the LDS group interfered because of their religious beliefs, etc. I also exacted my opinion on the separation of Church and State. A couple of them saw me up and leave my church one Sunday a.m. before the election when the subject of abortion came up.

Anyway, surprisingly enough they seemed to get it. Unfortunately, many voted the wrong way on Prop 8 simply because they had no idea what it was about. After I got my mail I was waiting for the elevator and one of these lovely women came up to me and tugged at my sleeve. "The next time my daughter comes down to visit, I want you to come and have dinner with us. You and she have so much in common and she has no partner right now." Evidently this sweet soul has not been present when I was b*$(%ing about my two ex-husbands and other sundry males in my life. I said I'd be delighted to meet her.

Actually, I have met the daughter, she's a laugh riot, and when I catch her alone and relate this story to her she will fall over laughing. Just thought you'd all enjoy as I did.

See, I've still got it!

2. I tell my babylove all the time
that we can't change the world; at least not all at once. But we can paint our corner of it any color we want to.

Likewise, you can't make lasting change by big splashy campaigns. The lemmings will run this way or that. But you can build lasting change one mind at a time, one quiet, teaching moment at a time.

 monmouth! :pals: :toast:

3. Do you ever wonder if Prop 8 confused some voters?
A lot of people don't stay as up on politics as people do here at DU. Previous measures in other states were referred to as "gay marriage bans" or "gay marriage ban amendments." This was simply "Prop 8." I would guess some voters who can't afford a TV or newspapers, particularly non-English speakers, didn't even know that the state legalized same-sex marriage for some time. I just can't help but wonder if some less-informed voters checked yes on Prop 8 thinking it would legalize same-sex marriage, or how many voted yes on 8 having absolutely no idea what it was.

4. I read thoroughly my mail-in ballot here in Florida. The wording and
structuring of it was incredibly awful, very confusing. You're right, a non-informed person, who really doesn't care one way or the other about LGBT issues just hits the first box and moves on. As soon as I said "civil rights" that seemed to get their attention. But again, the sentence structure and legalese wording (I thought unnecessary) was very difficult to understand.

6. The initiators of Prop 8 did that on purpose, I'm sure.
I've seen other posts here on DU from folks who's friends and relatives were confused by the wording. I think it was done deliberately in an effort to get more people to vote away civil rights without realizing exactly what they were doing.

To me, this is a form of lying, and another example of lying by people who claim to be doing so in the name of their Lord.

8. I'm sorry - I didn't read your post closely enough. So the proposition in FL was also worded oddly?
The proposition in Florida has gotten a lot less attention than Prop 8 in CA. I'm not surprised that it was also worded in a confusing way.

9. I've worked in law off and on for years (court stenography back in the day)
and when I looked at it, I thought of a couple of lawyers I used to work for who would have thrown the wording of the Prop in the wastebasket.
