Virginity's making a comeback, report says
Edited on Sat Mar-05-11 02:07 PM by alp227
...a new report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics...(b)ased on in-person interviews with approximately 13,500 men and women between the ages of 15 to 44...describes who’s having sex with whom, what kind of sex they’re having, and who has yet to become sexually involved.

(snip)

Researchers found that between 2006 and 2008, the percentage of 15- to 24-year-old men who had never had any form of sexual contact with another person was 27 percent (up from 22 percent in 2002) while the percentage of 15- to 24-year-old females who had never had any sex whatsoever was 29 percent (up 7 percent points from 22 percent in 2002).

And no, don't jump to the conclusion "See? Abstinence education works!" No, it doesn't.

1. ugh. Virginity is really revolting.
What kind of a nut thinks virginity is a good thing? Undesired pregnancy is a bad thing, but virginity is not the answer; everybody just needs to learn about birth control

8. Virginity enforced by some power structure is revolting
and so is the notion that all human beings must fit into the same mold and have the same timeline for sexual experimentation.

3. My totally un-supported theory is this is a result of all those commercials
about treatment for genital herpes.

5. Um
73% and 71% are much bigger numbers than 27% and 29%, respectively.

10. 71% are not virgins. I guess there's hope still.

I guess the vast majority of 15-24 year old women are not virgins, then. It looks somewhat different when you swap the groups. That means, than in a random group of 100 women of that age, 71 of them have had sex. OK.

Better odds than when I was in that age group, I think, back in the 60's.

12. With all the problems associated with teen pregnancy
you would think this would be a good thing.

Nice to know that my cousin's super-smart kid (pre-med) is considered "crazy" on DU because she doesn't want to have sex until she's married.

13. Not having sex until you're married
seems like a recipe for discovering sexual incompatibility at exactly the wrong time.

15. "Self-reported virginity" that should be
Which could be very poorly correlated with actual virginity.
