SNL's High Fructose Corn Syrup Commercial Parody
by Raphael Brion

Here's a clip from last night's episode of Saturday Night Live: A parody of the high fructose corn syrup commercial from the Corn Refiners Association in which two suburban moms talk about how the dreaded HFCS is as safe as sugar.

In SNL's version, however, the mom serving Juicy Drink at a party doesn't take to criticism well: "You never what? Never heard of science? You know, this is a real jam for me: Trust scientists or stay-at-home mom Sheila from down the street who's having wine at 10AM."

The parody, and the original, at the link:

1. The original commercial is just as terrifying...
I love the way the corn syrup lady says "AND?"

2. The underlying message was - if you challenge HFCS
you'll get your ass handed to you by your neighbour.

This type of superiority complex is one of my biggest pet peeves. The attitude of the pro-corporate shills is always that anyone who dares to question these industries is uneducated, a luddite, an anti-science moron who can't possibly understand what they are talking about. They will arrogantly spout whatever they read on wikipedia, without a care as to whether they are really making any sense or not. They just *know* that big daddy can't ever be wrong and they have the neat looking data and terminology to bash people over the heads with, like that fake MIT engineer with his bullshit letter this week. No one should ever be cowed by these fools. They usually aren't capable of thinking for themselves.
