My PCP said today that alternatives to colonoscopies are coming soon!
Had my annual physical today and was surprised to learn that by the time I am due for another colonoscopy (in 2013) there will probably be a less invasive diagnostic procedure for detecting colon cancer. I asked what they would involve and he said one promising one was by using DOGS! That is because they have a 100% track record of identifying patients with colon cancers through stool samples.

Imagine such a low tech, inexpensive testing procedure: a dog's nose, rather than all kinds of fancy equipment and a time consuming, inconvenient and unpleasant (not to mention expensive!) event involved in a standard colonoscopy!

I did say to him "So much for modern medicine!" We both got a big laugh out of that...

1. Do the dogs sniff blood in the stool? If that is it, it is odd no one thought of it before.

5. That is strange. But I think we're so used to thinking up fancy, exensive high tech
stuff we don't think of this possibility. If you've ever been around dogs, you know what they sniff out...so...

3. I don't think the dog partiicularly cares, as long as it gets good care.
It's amazing to me that we could literally go to such a low tech alternative in this instance! But my doc said the dogs were 100% accurate and I can't argue with that...

10. I guess dogs find out if there are other animals that could be predators around
by doing that. I guess it's a survival instinct thing...

11. Quite a few dogs are crotch-sniffers
Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 04:03 PM by LiberalEsto
I've walked into people's houses where the dog tries to get its snout between a visitor's legs immediately and often has to be physically hauled away by the embarrassed owners.

Next thing you know, the dogs will be doing this and sending you a bill.
