Masturbation calms restless leg syndrome
00:01 01 April 2011 by Helen Thomson

Too much of it will make you go blind – or so you might have been told. But for some, masturbation might have a real clinical benefit: it can ease restless leg syndrome (RLS). The insight could provide sweet relief for the 7 to 10 per cent of people in the US and Europe who suffer from the condition.

RLS is a distressing neurologic disorder characterised by an urge to move the legs. It is usually associated with unpleasant sensations in the lower limbs such as tingling, aching and itching.

The exact causes of RSL have yet to be pinpointed, but brain autopsies and imaging studies suggest one contributing factor is an imbalance of dopamine – a hormonal messenger that, among other things, activates the areas of the brain responsible for pleasure. It is suspected that dopamine imbalance is responsible for some of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Drugs that increase dopamine have been shown to reduce symptoms of RLS when taken at bedtime and are considered the initial treatment of choice.

Or this is just considerate masturbation because you don't want to wake them up?

16. And here I just thought it was a faux symptom.
I admit RLS has never plagued me, but I stop short of explaining my truly killer tennis serve since I began travelling the information superhighway. This isn't good news for the company that makes the pills.

18. I had restless leg syndrome...
...when I was pregnant. It is a maddening condition. I couldn't sleep because I just wanted to move
and kick my legs. I'd be up pacing in the middle of the night, crying--so tired and so frustrated. It
really is horrible.

And I sure as hell wish that I knew about this "cure" back then.

Sorry about this message and the way it probably conjures up images of a very pregnant woman--with
uncontrollable spasmodic legs, masturbating with a frustrating vengeance. My bad!

19. Ha ha ha ha!
I have had RLS since I was a little kid, and I've taken Klonopin for years for it. My PCP has been trying to get me off the Klonopin because of its addictive nature. Can't wait to see if he broaches this possible alternative!

20. I think they made up that whole study
Just to see what kind of smartass responses it would generate. And judging from this thread, it looks like they're doing OK so far.

Gotta go now. My leg is twitching.

24. Interesting! I wonder if there's a correlation between
lack of sex/orgasm and higher incidence of RLS.

Take your vitamins,
get regular exercise,
eat an apple a day
AND
get yourself off real good.
