I asked my husband's doctor about this during his recent hospitalization for a bladder/urinary tract infection. (he had been slowly passing a large kidney stone, which was partially blocking his urinary tract and reducing his urine stream to a trickle) He takes drugs to suppress his immune system so as not to reject an organ transplant, so they had him on IV antibiotics for 4 days and sent him home with a prescription for Cipro. (!)

Anyways, I asked how the infection got there if urine is sterile, and she said it's *close enough* to sterile that infection is *usually* not a problem as long as it can flow out of the body normally.
