Taking aspirin just once a month 'reduces risk of pancreatic cancer'

Taking the painkiller once a month was found to reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer by 26 per cent.

More regular use of low-dose aspirin for heart disease prevention made people 35 per cent less likely to have the disease.

The study showed no benefit from any of the drugs apart from aspirin.


Lead researcher Dr Xiang-Lin Tan, from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, US, said: 'The results are not meant to suggest everyone should start taking aspirin once monthly to reduce their risk of pancreatic cancer. Individuals should discuss use of aspirin with their physicians because the drug can have side effects.

1. wow, that's good news

My mom died of pancreatic cancer. I take low dose aspirin regularly -- have for many many years now.

Something else that is supposed to help the pancreas is alpha lipoic acid, a strong anti-inflammatory. I've been taking it despite the fact that if you don't get it swallowed with other food following it, it causes HEARTBURN. Capitalized.

But tis supposed to be good stuff.

so reducing it by 35% seems a relatively small risk reduction.

I looked up the incidence of pancreatic cancer for my demographic (white female). The incidence is 10 in every 100,000 persons in this category.

Of course, if you are one of those ten people, then there's a chance you would be very happy to be one of the 3 people who avoided it. Also, please note that African American males have a much higher incidence: around 20 in every 100,000.

(I looked up my risk factor on another website and received a risk diagnosis as "below normal." Whew.)

Aspirin is considerably more toxic to cats than it is to dogs. I was hoping you had not given the cat any.

9. A. The safe dose and interval of aspirin is very low/infrequent, so I rarely recommend it.

B. I've never even heard of pancreatic CA in the cat, let alone seen a case.

I manage my pancreatic kitties with K/D diet (high fat, the opposite of what dogs and people with pancreatitis benefit from, but cats ARE contrary) and prednisolone (adrenocortical steroid, very safe and effective anti-inflammatory drug). YMMV.

most the time with inflammatory bowel disease.
