Roundup: Birth Defects Caused By World's Top-Selling Weedkiller, Scientists Say

WASHINGTON -- The chemical at the heart of the planet’s most widely used herbicide -- Roundup weedkiller, used in farms and gardens across the U.S. -- is coming under more intense scrutiny following the release of a new report calling for a heightened regulatory response around its use.

Critics have argued for decades that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and other herbicides used around the globe, poses a serious threat to public health. Industry regulators, however, appear to have consistently overlooked their concerns.

A comprehensive review of existing data released this month by Earth Open Source, an organization that uses open-source collaboration to advance sustainable food production, suggests that industry regulators in Europe have known for years that glyphosate, originally introduced by American agricultural biotechnology giant Monsanto in 1976, causes birth defects in the embryos of laboratory animals.

2. THIS is why Monsanto is evil, not GMOs.
We could be using genetic engineering to create pest-resistant crops, but no, Monsanto is more interested in creating crops that can tolerate more and more RoundUp.

Glyphosate is fucking poison.

3. My neighbor,
a forest worker uses the industrial strength version of this rap in his yard - and I am not talking about just spots. He drenches whole segments of the yard in this stuff. When he did this during an inversion I finaly complained. He assured me that it is the safest product on the market and will not hurt anyone.
The company through its saesmen have done a thorough job of training the public with their lies.

A while ago they found that the safety testing was done on the gyphosate only. When they finally did the testing on the complete product they found different and more toxic results.

5. No - but we used to have
an irrigation ditch behind our lots. They had to put the water into pipes and bury them because of all the contamination from homeowners' chemicals and septics. The water use to flow into Dungeness Bay which often had to be closed to crab and oyster harvest due to the contamination. Now it is piped and recirculated only because of salmon protections.
When we lose the "Endangered Species" designation, we lose one of the only protections for human health we have left.
