worrying whether or not to wake him up and take him to the ER. Reading too many spooky websites.

A red 'spider bite' that was swollen, but we don't really have spiders to speak of. He has a fever and was short of breath. He was exhausted...it seems like he is always exhausted, but that is another matter. I am hoping it is ok to let him sleep till the morning because I'm pretty fried too.

Why is it always 1-4 am when kids pose emergencies? Mine anyway...thanks for listening DU.

I feel for you. I have kids myself and it is difficult when they are sick and not feeling well.

Be careful about those "spooky websites" though. You can easily start to believe that a hangnail
is a life-threatening condition. I've been there! The red bump could easily be a spider bite
or a bug bite that is just irritated. It may just be a virus and the red bump could have nothing
to do with that. Hang tight!

I won't tell you to not worry--cuz that's what we parents do! He's young and healthy and it's amazing
how youth is such an advantage, even when it's the flu or a virus.

I hope everything is OK and your son is feeling better soon. My kids have always had that timing issue too. Thankfully the oldest (college-bound in a few weeks) seems to have outgrown it. Here's hoping her brother does too, but he's just starting middle school. Several years left of new kids, new germs.

My son had MRSA and if you have seen the swelling increase significantly and it isfeels warm to the touch I'd take him in asap. The quicker its treated the better. This is a painful and aggressive bacteria.timing oz important if it's MRSA. WE had multiple bouts of this probably because my wife works at an icu, don't worry its very treatable and will get better.

16. Update, the doc prescribed an antibiotic that kills MRSA

The kid feels super lousy so I sure hope this stuff helps.

I waited from 1:30 am until 12:45 this afternoon for an appointment.

Our system is nuts. It is really painful to see this strong kid laid low.

Thank you for all your good thoughts; I'm sure he will be fine. Right?

17. It does get better

If there is swelling you might want to take a magic marker and outline the red so you can watch it be reduced. Did the doctor drain the area? It takes a couple of days for the antibiotics to truly reduce swelling, but they do work.

I know this is hard to watch, my son wasn't quite one when he had his first bout. Since then we had a couple of recurrences and had to start adding a small amount of bleach to his bath every so often and it has seemed to stop. Swimming in chlorine also works :)

19. Not everyone who gets MRSA is going to go into massive organ failure

and they're still trying to nail down why some people do.

For future reference, shortness of breath = ER. Don't wait if that is one of the symptoms.
