Olive Oil Boosts the Heart Benefits of Fish Oil
http://blog.lef.org/2011/09/how-to-enhance-heart-health-benefits-of.html

The latest scientific evidence shows that when consumed in combination, omega-3 fats and olive oil offer greater benefits than either nutrient alone.

In a study, scientists presented data regarding atherosclerosis prevention in pre-clinical, animal models. The Norwegian researchers studied animals with arterial plaques and administered a blend of marine omega-3 fats and extra virgin olive oil. The progression of atherosclerosis was the primary measurement they were interested in.

What they discovered was amazing: in the female animals, there was a significant reduction in the size of arterial plaques in the aorta and in the aortic arch. The male animals experienced significant reductions in the size of arterial plaques in the thoracic and abdominal aortas.5

1. The earth will provide what we need to stay healthy, as
long as Monsanto doesn't get its greedy hands on it.

2. Thousands of years ago, Monsanto did not exist.
All we ate was pure, organic, and natural - straight from the earth.

And you were likely to die before age 30.

4. Yes, but how did we die, is the question.
If you read up on researchers who have studied diets of Paleolithic man, they did not die of disease.

I'll leave it to you to work out how since you're clearly an expert.

9. If you're interested I can post a reference.
But it sounds like you already know your answer.

Take a look at the book- The Paleo Diet.

10. Ever hear of sickle-cell trait?

It's an evolutionary defense mechanism against malaria--a fatal disease.

That alone disproves the nonsense that Paleolithic hunter-gatherers didn't die of disease, least of all because of their diet.

Now if you'd like to show your sources for the preposterous claim that Paleolithic humans didn't die of disease (I'm fascinated to find out how those statistics were compiled), be my guest. Double points if any of those sources prove that this "paleo diet" is what protects against disease.

ETA: By the way, are you lactose tolerant? If so, you've evolved to digest a diet that postdates the Paleolithic by thousands of years

11. Sorry, I should have qualified what I said.
They didn't die from coronary artery disease. Or diabetes. Or cirrhosis. Or any of the modern diseases. They died from injuries sustained from accidents, hunting, among other things. Almost none of which happen today. You ought to read the book. It's the culmination of decades of research.

12. It's hard to die of those things when you don't live past 30.
I've read the book. It has some good suggestions, but is based largely on cognitive errors and faulty assumptions.

Correlation doesn't equal causation. The logical equivalent to "the paleo diet prevents X, Y, and Z diseases" is "the paleo diet increases your chances of dying young from accidents, hunting, etc."

Did you really read the book?

14. I don't see that as a problem.
After all, that is around the same time period in which we began moving away from the paleo diet. It's not a big deal, and it certainly doesn't threaten the paleo diet discoveries. And they are discoveries, not theories.

16. Who cares whether they are discoveries or theories?
Edited on Fri Sep-30-11 10:39 PM by HuckleB
Quite frankly, the reality remains that any discovery about that time is subject to further review by further discovery. So what's your point?

This paleo diet crap is one of most hilarious snake oil sells in some time, and the fact that you simply ignore all the evidence that goes against the bozos selling books and gathering lecture fees is quite telling.

Do you have any idea how much one has to ignore to buy into that crap?

8. Oh, so that's our choice?
Die by 30 living a natural diet, or live another 50+ years and die of a disease?

EVEN IF that were true (and it's not), I think I know which I'd take. Here's a hint, too: live longer and you're more likely to develop a disease. Go figure!
