Those who have experienced hip problems, how did they begin?
I am 59 and have had no serious health problems, but this past month my left leg will buckle for a moment out of nowhere and it emanates from my left hip although there is no pain. Also, this is random and all I need to do is to be walking.

I have wondered when the little aches and pains and problems of growing old would finally begin and maybe this is it. I'm wondering if this merits a trip to my doctor, but I don't want to have it dismissed as nothing.

3. No, it's not all I have, but what I do have started a month ago when I started working again.
Not real physical work, but more than doing next to nothing at all.

My leg just randomly buckling is something I am concerned about because it could cause me to fall over which could lead to me not working.

Last February when I had my yearly physical I told my doctor that I was appreciative that at age 58 I could wake up in the morning and nothing hurt. Now those days are likely over because not only do I have the hip problem, but also my right elbow and shoulder hurt.

5. I hear ya. I've got two more years 'til Medicare, then I'll have my hip checked....
...probably too many games of hoops over the years.

I'm generally pretty healthy now, although I've had some serious health problems in the past - cancer, stuff like that.

I said years ago that if I could only be active when nothing hurt, I'd have to lie down and die.

My hip started as a numb aching after prolonged standing. Now it hurts most of the time and feels "weak".

Good luck! We're not getting younger!

4. Probably right, but it's been years since I've gone to the doctor for anything except
my yearly physical.

12. Could also be a knee thing, causing your leg to buckle. Go get checked out

6. Mine started that way
I would find myself on the ground. Turned out I had a bone cyst in the hip along with osteoarthritis,.

7. Many years ago, when I was in
my twenties, I occasionally had that happen. At the time I had a job where I stood all day. In high heels since I'm female and this was the 1970's. Anyway, it wasn't all that bad and it did go away.

However, you're some three decades older than I was then, so getting it checked out would not be a bad idea. Speaking for myself (and I have several years on you) what I've noticed about getting older is that random minor things will happen and then go away. Right now, if I sit for too long (and I have a part time job where I sit the whole time) when I first get up I'm very stiff. It goes away after just two minutes of walking. The other day as I walked into work all of a sudden my right ankle hurt as I walked and caused me to limp. Weird. But that went away a few hours later.

My point is that oddball stuff does happen, and you need to make a judgement call on the pain level or "disability" aspect (left leg buckling) and go from there.

9. The thing is, that when something used to hurt or bother me
I knew that it was because I had done something to cause it. Now things seem to happen out of the blue. I've gotten old without noticing it, until now that is.

10. My point exactly.
I will have random things happen -- like the ankle thing recently -- that seem to have no cause. The stiffness is probably incipient arthritis at my age. But I do need to stress that these are all pretty minor.

11. I get really stiff sometimes after sitting or sleeping.
But it goes away. I just keep on walking.
