Kansas town devastated after student dies following ankle injury

LYNDON, KS (KCTV5) -
A small Kansas town is devastated after a middle schooler died following an ankle injury suffered in a football game.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday afternoon at Mt. Pleasant Church southeast of Lyndon for 13-year-old Alec Mounkes.

Alec was a typical seventh grader who loved sports, especially playing football for the Lyndon Middle School Lions.

He suffered an ankle injury on Oct. 6. He was initially treated for a sprained ankle and told to keep weight off it, according to a statement from the school district.

But the injury worsened. On Oct. 11, he was rushed from school by ambulance to a Topeka hospital. He had developed blood clots and went into cardiac arrest. He was then flown to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City where he eventually received amputations on both of his legs in what would be a vain attempt to save his life.

He died about 5 p.m. last Thursday.

4. I read it - so sad. I still don't get what/how exactly the ankle injury caused the blood clots.

It isn't explained.

Scary.

Reminds me of Natasha Richardson - bumped her head during a beginner ski lesson - was lucid and fine afterward, refused treatment then complained of a headache later and died.

They say how you can die from a concussion. People bump their heads all the time and don't think much about it. You can't freak about everything YET freak accidents happen & cause catastrophic results. Such is life.

5. MIDDLE school football? Save it for senior high please.

These kids are so young that football as an organized middle school sport seems extreme. At my middle school (I went 2003-2005) football wasn't offered in sports. (Off-campus youth football programs do exist and are toned down for the more motivated kids out there.)

8. They play in the elementary

in most places. Full pads and tackling.

I actually idolized a Pop Warner star when I was in elementary school. Only played flag in 4th-6th grade though.

6. He must have had some undiagnosed blood problem. This could have occurred even if he did not play

football. An ankle can be sprained stepping off a curb wrong.
