Today, more than 12 times that number come to the center for such treatments as acupuncture, Reiki, massage therapy, nutritional counseling and yoga therapy.

"Since the Cleveland Clinic is an academic institution, what we offer are evidence-based therapies," says Edwards. "I am not going to recommend therapies that don't have scientific merit."
Edwards provides patients with a one-hour consultation that addresses their physical illness, as well as their emotional and spiritual health and well-being. She emphasizes the importance of nutrition, particularly an anti-inflammatory diet. Inflammatory foods are high in animal fats, trans fats, sugar and refined carbohydrates.
