Ontario closer to regulating Chinese medicine

"Ontario will introduce legislation by the end of the year to regulate Chinese medicine and acupuncture, Health Minister George Smitherman said Friday.

Smitherman made the announcement following the release of 10 recommendations by a government-appointed panel.

The panel suggested setting up a regulatory college to oversee traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), as well as limiting those who can perform acupuncture to qualified and regulated practitioners.

Currently, there are few standards governing who can practise TCM or perform acupuncture in Ontario.
