Cleaning method may stop CJD spread

Scientists have developed a new hospital cleaning method that could stop the spread of the human form of "Mad Cow Disease", it has emerged.

The infectious particles that cause the condition - linked to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) - are known to be immune to most traditional sterilisation processes.

The particles, known as prions, vary so much from all other known viral and bacterial infections that they can linger on surgical instruments despite sterilisation.

According to the team, current decontamination procedures drawn up by the Department of Health are unlikely to remove all traces of infection from surgical instruments. CJD has also previously been transmitted by contaminated neurosurgical instruments, tissue grafts, and contaminated human pituitary hormones. The development of new methods for destroying prions is therefore of "vital importance".

1. There was already a cleaning method
Apparently all you have to do to get rid of the stuff is soak the stuff in lye and then heat the instruments to 700 degrees for several hours.

Or we could,

you know,

maybe...

stop feeding cows (and sheep and other mammals) to cows and then eating them.

Or not. :eyes:

5. Same Thing
Time span between death and contact of the disease decreases when it has come from the same species.

6. Cats are at risk of prion diseases
due to the nasty shit that goes into low grade cat food (and even some premium brands.) That's where a lot of the downer cows (the ones too dangerous for the human food supply) wind up, along with roadkill and other redering plant nastiness.

Pretty scary if you've ever used a people spoon to serve up the kitty food or fed them on your dishes. Or if you've ever eaten at the house of somebody who has. Unless of course your use brain surgery sterilization techniques on your dishes, in which case you're probably safe.

I feel better already, don't you?

:sarcasm:

3. Right
Well get rid of the reservoir and then get rid of the vector.
I believe that the surgical tools for a neurological operation are about $10,000.
And they have to be destroyed. At lest they do something when they suspect that the patient has some form of this infectious disease.

4. Damn, there's a novel idea.
No, instead let's spend millions of dollars developing a new super-disinfectant that is ompletely unneccesary. :banghead:

7. I'm all for ending the practice of feeding dead animals to

other animals. It's insane that no one ever considered that using animals that had died of disease as feed for other animals just might be dangerous. They knew they couldn't sell the meat of animals dead from disease for health reasons; shouldn't someone have had a clue that the meat could be unhealthy for livestock as well?

And, yes, who hasn't eaten at the home of someone whose cats and/or dogs are allowed to lick the dishes? People still believe the old crapola that a dog's mouth has fewer bacteria than a human's. Wrong!!!

Not only that, you can get intestinal parasites from kissing your animals. Ask any parasitologist if they kiss their pets. . . and be sure you have time to listen to all the reasons why they don't!

8. But It Is Still
Being done. The only thing that has changed is that it goes from cow to pig or chicken then back to cow.
It is still in the loop except the loop has widened.

9. Oh, isn't that just the most disgusting thing!
My BIL lets his baby chew on the dogs toy and when I said something, he goes "A dogs mouth is cleaner than a persons". Well, my dog eats cat shit, has consumed dead things, and licks his own penis. How is that mouth going to be cleaner than a human's?
