Standing in the Shoes of the Uninsured |
|
"Our current health care system is not prepared for responding to a growing segment of our community that has fallen through the cracks, making too much money for Medicaid coverage but not enough to afford medical care on their own," said Thomas O'Toole, M.D., associate dean of curriculum at Georgetown University's School of Medicine. "We need a better approach to connecting people to affordable health care and safeguards to keep them from becoming bankrupt trying to stay healthy."
Students in Georgetown's Health Rights Project telephoned 311 health care sites listed in the Greater District of Columbia Yellow Pages, posing as uninsured adults or as parents of an uninsured child. The results showed the struggle of obtaining even basic health care and screening without health insurance.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 46 million people were without health insurance coverage in 2004, about 16 percent of the population.

1. Well, it's nice that The Med schools Dean is saying this, but |
|
we all knew it for a long time now! Now that he's pointed out the problem, what does he suggest for a cure???
