Anyone ever try e-cigarettes?
I've heard they are just like smoking, without the smoke and carcinogens.

3. Poor ignorant people.
There is really such a thing. It's called an electronic cigarette and it delivers nicotine to the lungs, just like a real cigarette, but without all of the other carcinogens. It even delivers it in a "cloud," but the cloud is water vapour, not smoke.

4. The problem is that nicotine will still damage your body
One of the things it does is cause smooth muscle to contract. That's the kind of muscle that lines your arteries. It's why smokers age a lot faster than non smokers and why that first butt of the day can cause a heart attack. If there is any blockage in your arteries--and we all have some blockage--that artery spasm from nicotine will shut it down completely. If what's downstream is heart muscle, you've just had a heart attack and lost part of your heart.

There's no way to cheat with this thing. Either you quit or you don't.

5. There are a LOT worse things than nicotine in cigarettes.
I know it, and you know it.

6. The point is that the nicotine damages your body
You really don't want to stay an addict and wreck your body, do you?

If you did, you'd just turn to chewing tobacco.

7. Chewing tobacco does nothing to satisfy my cravings.
NOTHING.

8. Then your cravings have nothing to do with nicotine
Remember those whole licorice roots?

They work.

9. I've heard of them a few times from you.

The problem is there is no where here to buy them.

The other thing I don't get is that people who are anti-smoking are continually pushing nicotine replacement crap on me, but the one kind of nicotine replacement system that I suggest: electronic cigarettes, doesn't seem to impress them. This seems kind of stupid to me.

10. I supplied you with a link on my first reply to you
and said 4 ounces would probably get you through.

There are several companies selling them online. Google will get you there via "whole licorice root."

12. I think you're full of it, Warpy.
Sorry, but you must understand that I've heard everything from drinking water from sippy cups to "smoking" twizzlers. Then there's rock rose, easyway, and nicotine patches, lozenges, gum, etc. The fact is that nothing is going to help but TIME. And I'm none too sure I am ready to give up the COMFORT that I get from smoking.

I got the habit from putting a cigarette to my mouth and burning tobacco, which released a drug called nicotine directly into my lungs, which increased dopamine levels in the synapses, and gave me that "ahhhh" feeling. I got hooked on all of the processes leading to that "ahhh" feeling. None of which are embodied in either licorice root, sippy cups, or rock rose, or even nicotine replacement patches, gum, or lozenges.

Now, I ask about the e-cigarette, which delivers nothing but nicotine to my lungs, without burning tobacco, by the same route (ie, hand to mouth) that gave me the comfort I derived from cigarettes in the first place, and all of a sudden, I'm putting myself at terrible health risk. But fucking nicotine lozenges, patches, and gum are okay, right?

Yeah, someone's full of shit. And all the others, even though we're in a fucking health forum here, think it's funny to make remarks about e-lights and e-sex.

13. Quitting is tough
and it's easy to get cranky. Trust me, I was there.

The habit was the hardest part to break for me. I did the nicotine gum, but like you I missed the hand to mouth and smoke entering my lungs. How did I get past that? I don't know. I just took it one day at a time and did it. I was bitchy, couldn't take a joke for about four months, and got into a lot of arguments with my husband, my parents, and online. It helped pass the time. I didn't sit in the same spot when I used to computer, to break myself out of the habitual cigarette lighting mode. I drove less, drank less coffee, and did a lot less that I associated with cigs.

Eventually it passed.

15. Drank less coffee?

Oh, geez, I'm never going to quit if I have to cut down on coffee.

16. I know...
It sucks.

Another thing I did was move my regular place in the morning (at my computer desk) where I'd light a cigarette and drink my coffee while surfing and checking my work email. It was a pattern. Now I have a laptop, sit in a different section of the room, cut back to one cup of coffee a day.

But everyone works differently, so you have to choose what woudl work best for you to quit. And if you don't want to or aren't ready to quit, that's your decision too. I'm certainly not going to berate you. If you are up for it and want moral support, I'd be happy to do that for you. If not, that's cool too.

14. Oh
and it's an alternative better than smoking actual cigarettes, but if you want to break the psychological habit of smoking, then it probably isn't as helpful as using the gum or patch. (It will keep the patterns there, making it easier to go back to smoking.)

But if you think it's the only thing that will get you through this, then give it a shot. I truly hope you have success in the quitting. It's a pain in the heart, head and soul to do it!
