2005: Bush Buys $1.4 Billion of Rummie's Tamiflu When Influenza Was Already Showing Resistance
Jan 12 · Back in 2005, our government decided to buy a bunch of anti-virals just in case Bird Flu (avian influenza) made it to our shore. At the time, administration critics noted that Donald Rumsfeld owned a lot of stock in Gilead Sciences which shared the rights to the Tamiflu (oseltamivir) patent. Rummie’s stock in Gilead soared in price thanks to the huge sale to our government and the massive publicity that caused people to stockpile the drug. What few people outside the medical profession noticed

1. There is some really stupid shit in that Journal post
For example:

Each time a patient died of influenza on Tamiflu, Roche (and Rummie) would have known about it.

Do you really think that the Secretary of Defense knows every time a patient dies while taking medication manufactured by a company in which he owns stock?

You may have a good point, but when you say stupid shit like that, it makes it really hard to see what that point is.

3. how eloquent of you
my goodness, you attack me as the writer, yet the post is by another DU member.
You did READ the post, right?
Were you able to SEE/READ who the poster name was?

Should you more properly ATTACK the AUTHOR of the message.

Maybe, the more logical answer is this - YOU DIDN'T READ THE ENTIRE POST.

If you want to insult someone, go to the original thread that I linked to, and
insult the author.

That would be LESS STUPID OF YOU.

2. Bird flu scare
It was trumped up BS.
Rummie sold 27 Million dollars worth of inflated stock.
Then it was announced that Tamiflu was not effective.
Then the stock tanked.

Why aren't we still worried about Bird Flu?
We found out it kills birds.

5. Who are you saying isn't still worried about Avian Influenza mutating?
When was it announced that Tamiflu wasn't effective in treating all strains of influenza? The Bird Flu as you call it is remarkably effective at killing humans in addition to birds. Next time you have a thought let it go.

7. So if this was just a payoff Obama will immediately reverse course.
Obviously Obama would not purchase anymore Tamiflu if the journal writer is correct. I guess we'll just wait and see.

9. I don't believe Obama has the Constitutional power to charge anyone with crimes.
He could however easily change course on this issue. Of course he would have to decide that Tamiflu won't be effective on a virus strain that doesn't exist yet and that's probably not a decision that he will be willing to make.
