Pump iron to stop middle-age spread
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/11657010/

DALLAS - By just lifting weights twice a week for an hour, women can battle the buildup of tummy fat that often takes hold with aging, a new study suggests.

And they didn’t even diet.

The study focused on intra-abdominal fat, the deep fat that wraps itself around organs and is the most unhealthy because it’s linked with heart disease.

.................

“I think exercise is the fountain of youth,” she said. “If it was a pill, everyone would be taking it.”

1. Lifting Weights is Greatly Underrated
in the general population, especially for groups like women and the elderly who traditionally don't participate.

In addition to raising metabolism, a weight regime adds extra muscle mass that also burns lots of calories. An additional benefit is increased vigor, which tends to incease a person's general activity level. And for the elderly, it can mean the ability to operate normally rather than struggle just to walk and complete simple tasks.

The effect on intrabdominal fat is a bonus.

2. 25-50 miles a Day
on a bicycle keeps the weight off too.
I'm nearing 60, eat watever I want
and have about 2% body fat.

A few years ago one of my (younger and overweight) co-workers
said I "Look too thin to be an American"
Looking at the human landscape these days,
I'd tend to agree.

Saving $100+ on gas each month is an added bonus.

3. The collision course...
...between obesity and the nearly 20% of the GDP we spend on healthcare in this country is way, way more likely to topple our economy than SS or illegal immigration...so why isn't it in the news instead of those other two topics in the past few years?

Might have something to do with how fat those red states are.
